random 5 friday

Random 5 Friday
is a weekly meme hosted by the lovely Nancy Claeys
5 random facts about life at my little acre

1. Good news this week! I had a clean bill of health at the multiple sclerosis clinic. No visible changes in the past year. Yay! I told my neurologist and the nurse practitioner that I felt like I had wasted their time. Grinning he said, we like having our time wasted.
2. Every year around this time my 3 sisters, mother and I get together for a pot luck and some girl talk. We eat, they drink wine and we share our joys and burdens, renewing the valuable ties of family and womanhood. Tonight is the night!

3. Lavender continues to entertain with her bunny performances. Her newest silliness is free-form 360s under her wicker shelf (a wicker breakfast tray I found at a thrift shop).

4. The AquaFarm I bought last month stands empty. I don’t know why Renoman is hemming and hawing about going to the pet shop to pick out a fish, but one thing I've learned from being dependent on others these past few years is to be gracious and patient. The fish will arrive eventually. If you aren't in my facebook community maybe you haven't have heard of an AquaFarm.

5. I went to pick Lavender up the other day to put her on her grooming table (a mat on top of the dryer) and she whimpered like a puppy. I think I heard my heart break. I had no idea that my single handed grasp was hurting her ~ it didn't when she was a baby. I promised to never to pick her up like that again. So, I'm turning to you, my friends. Any ideas how I can get her to the grooming table without picking her up by hand?

  2. wonderful news Sue.You not only are well ,you look wonderful .Wear that beautiful red dress again. :) I am not sure , if this would work, but I would make her walk on a little blanket, then quickly grab the four corners with her in it like a bundle of rabbit, and then lift her on the table.I think you could do this with one hand and it should not hurt Lavender.Good luck!!

  14. Sue,
Make a strap about 6 inches wide and 12 inches long with a loop of some kind on each end. With one hand, push the strap and one ring under her, taking the ring in one hand, putting it over her to grasp the other end. Then, you can pick her up with her legs hanging and her stomach supported. Of course, make the dimensions to fit her and maybe a little padding/stiffener so it will not just be a piece of material that wads up under her stomach.

Or, make her a ramp that you can guide her up.

I thought my brother held his by the back of its neck, like a cat.

Maybe get a basket that you could train her to hop into. Then, you could lift it.

Are you sure that you hurt her? I mean, does she have something on her that would hurt her--don't know, boil or something?

That is great news about your health.

    1. Linda, thank you for all the advice! Lavender doesn't seem to have any sores, though that was a very good thought. The rabbitry where I bought her did say I could pick her up as you described your brother doing, but to use it sparingly for times when she is being unruly. She is a Rex and handling her like that will damage her coat. Thanks again! xoxo

  15. oh Sue - i am just so pleased about the good news from the docs! you are also very fortunate to have such a lovely looking family of women to hang out with! i hope that you all had a wonderful time. as to the bunny situation, i can add nothing having never raised any (soon, i hope. fingers crossed!), so you will have to consider the advice of the other commenters and figure out what might work.

sending lots of love. your friend,

  16. I'm new here but we raised and showed Mini Rex rabbits for years. Unless there's a reason you can't use both hands to pick Lavender up the best way is the way you'd pick up a puppy. One hand under her belly and one hand under her chin on her chest. You can actually "bruise" her fun trying to scruff her, although this is acceptable for some breeds.
And it's absolutely wonderful that your visit to the doctor went so well! I hope when I come back after your next visit you've posted the same news!

    1. Hi, Beth. Thank you for your suggestion. Unfortunately, I have paralysis on one side from a stroke and can only use my left hand. Any other suggestions? It sounds like you know rabbits. :-)

  18. Maybe Lavender bunny could hop into a basket on the floor & you could elevate her (and the basket) to the grooming table? LOVE your blog!

    1. Thanks for commenting, Ellie. Since writing about this issue I've bought a small pet carrier for Lavender to go into so I can lift her safely to the grooming surface. So glad you are enjoying my blog. :-)
